The Hunter Wetlands Centre is one of Newcastle’s best kept secrets - an award winning Ramsar listed wetlands of international significance only 10 mins from the centre of Newcastle!  If you think of wetlands generally as a bit of swamp and that’s it – then you are in for a great surprise. Experience our visitors centre with displays of frogs, fish, blue tongues, bearded dragons, Eastern Long neck turtles, water dragons, snakes and even a freshwater crocodile on display. Interactive reptile talks are on offer that gives visitors a chance to touch and have their photo taken with the animals. The Hunter Wetlands Centre changes all the time with the seasons. The range of birdlife is incredible with over 217 different species identified on site and through November to February the wetlands are home to hundreds of egrets that come here to breed on the Melaleuca Swamp. Walking trails meander through the large 45 hectare site with different pockets of little ecosystems to explore – rainforest, reeds beds, melaleucas and a Casuarina forest. The site is active with wildlife – frogs can be heard and found with a keen eye and turtles can often be spotted swimming just below the surface of the ponds or sunning themselves on a log. The Hunter Wetlands Centre offers a great range of activities that range from weaving with plants, bush tucker garden tours to a bush adventure day where kids can have fun building a makeshift shelter and having a go at making damper. A popular activity is always the dipnetting. Kids love fishing for tiny and fascinating pondlife to examine at close range to learn about healthy wetlands.  We offer guided walks, guided canoe tours (and canoe hire), Segway tours (for over 11yrs) and bikes are available for hire.  The site has a range of BBQ shelters and picnic areas. We are open 7 days 9am – 4pm.
