Environmental Education Opportunities

After experiencing the Alice Springs Desert Park, students will see and feel the wonders of Central Australia in new and exciting ways. What was dry, barren and empty is suddenly, rich with life and full of thousands of stories. The stories of the plants and animals of the desert are shared through interpretative displays and daily guide presentations. The displays and presentations also explain the Aboriginal use of plants and animals, the management of the desert by Aboriginal people and how this country has changed since the arrival of Europeans.

Students can also explore three stunning habitats
, witness the energy of free flying birds at the nature theatre presentation, and see rare and endangered animals in the nocturnal house and take a cinematic journey through 4½ billion years of the creation of these deserts.

Teachers can self-lead their groups or participate in a one hour program with one of our specialist staff or an extended guided tour with a Park Guide. At night explore rare and endangered species of the Central Australian desert on a Nocturnal Tour.

The Desert Park is a 10-minute drive from the centre of Alice Springs and facilities include a café, audio guides, gift shop and a picnic and BBQ ground.  Open 7.30am to 6.00pm daily, except Christmas Day. A visit of three hours is recommended.
